Russia and Africa

There have been sitings of Russian politicians and wealthy businessmen in the African continent. The president of Russia Vladimir Putin believes that he has the right to expand his business and the business of Russia anywhere that he pleases. Russia is seeking to restore and strengthen its influences in Africa like it once had had them. Algeria in particular is the biggest customer for Russia. Russia is selling the people of Africa cheaper military equipment than they would get from the United States. Russia is also using Africa for its minerals, it is cheaper to get them from Africa than it would be for them to get them elsewhere.

Algeria's president Abdelaziz Bouteflika decided to resign after 20 years of being in presidency. He finally decided that he wanted to resign because of the many protests that broke out and also the Army chief demanded he be removed no matter the costs. The announcement that he was quitting left the citizens so happy that they took to the streets to celebrate (as shown in the picture). The reason that the riots started were because the president announced that he was going for a 5th term. The president has not been seen in public since he suffered a stroke in 2013. He is said to quit by April 28 even though many people want him out of office yesterday. Zimbabwe Women & Soldiers

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-47042101 Women that have been raped by security forces during the night raids to suppress recent protests have been urged to report their cases to police officers. Only one attack has been reported out of the many allegations that have been made. There is a lot of mistrust between the women and the authorities because they were also involved in the crackdown of the protests. The state-funded Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission accused soldiers of using "systematic torture" in the crackdown. One woman claims that the soldiers openly agreed that they both wanted to have sex.

Sierra Leone Declares Rape a National Emergency

The President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maado Bio,  has officially declared rape a national emergency. In his doing so he has also announced free hospital care to sexual assault victims, he created a special police and court divisions to deal with the cases that come in, he also established a hotline where victims can call. In this quote from the article it explains the situation, "Sierra Leone's sexual violence statistics are harrowing. According to the country's police service, there were more than 8,500 reported case of sexual- and gender-based violence in 2018 — and a third of these involved a minor. But many activists, and the country's first lady, say the number of actual cases is likely much higher, as many instances go unreported". Most of the victims are under the age of 15.
